Tips on Finding Viet Ingredients and Restaurants

Where can you buy and eat authentic Vietnamese? Below is a guide to help you locate ethnic markets, restaurants, and Viet communities. I'm not all knowing so send me your recommendations for posting on these pages!

  • Pan-Asian and Vietnamese Malls
  • Chinatowns
  • Korea and Japantowns
  • Asian market chains
  • Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese Markets

  • Find a Viet enclave and check the local yellow-pages for "Grocers and Markets."
  • Thai, Cambodian and Laotian markets will offer staples for Vietnamese cooking. The herbs may not be available but other essentials (etc., fish sauce) will be on the shelves.

For a comprehensive listing of Thai markets in America, go to Kasma Loha-Unchit's site: www.thaifoodandtravel.com/marketsusa.html

Here's the Khmermarket.com's yellow page listing of Cambodian markets nationwide: www.khmermarket.com/html/kmyp/market.htm

  • Chinatowns are another good source, as many ethnic Chinese-Vietnamese people may shop and or own businesses there.
  • Ask Viet people who are "in the know," such as:

The folks who run your favorite Vietnamese restaurant. Where do they buy their ingredients?

Your Vietnamese manicurist. Where does she or he eat and shop?

  • College students who are members of your local Vietnamese Student Association. Check the nearest university's website. VSA often put on cultural events and food festivals. Students have the bead on where the good food is!

  • Check with websites such as chowhound.com or egullet.com for tips from other diners.
