on Visitor Comment From Mark Brooks, who lives in Vietnam and wrote in 12/06: "Another
fantastic place in HCM city is the Luong Son restaurant situated at 31 Ly Tu Trong
Street. This place is always absolutely packed out with customers. Bo Tung Xao
is my favourite (a small BBQ on your table with the beef just melting in your
mouth), steamed saba fish, tamarind shrimp and Tiger beer in a glass of ice....
the choice is endless, the service is fantastic and a definite must if you ever
visit HCM. |
Evonne Tay from Singapore recently took a trip to Vietnam. She was generous enough to send the kitchen a short foodie travelogue of her adventures. Tee hee. Her comments will make you envy and want to go out for some great Viet chow! Hi Andrea,
I just got back from Ho Chi Minh City had the privilege to meet Mrs. Cam Van of Dzoan Restaurant. [This woman Evonne met is a major food personality in Vietnam, sort of a combo of Julia Child and Wolfgang Puck. She's got a TV program, cookbooks, and a restaurant. She also does product endorsements!] Also managed to buy the Viet curry from Anh Hai in Ben Thanh Market (recommended by Mrs. Van), lotus tea leaves and quite a lot of snacks.
I was told that the most popular Viet restaurant is called Quan An Ngon, which I understand to be a favourite amongst the foreigners and locals. Food is very reasonably priced and the ambience is rather appealing and charming
Tried Pho Hoa along Pasteur Street for 28000 Dong must say its fabulous! Looking at the Chinese characters, I guess Pho actually originates from China.. I shdnt be so surprised as it's quite similar to my favourite Hainanese beef noodles.
In many ways, Singapore and other Asian countries like Malaysia, Philippines, etc are deprived from the wonderful culture which Viet Kieus have brought over to the West. In many ways, countries like the US, Canada and Australia benefited so much from the Vietnamese exodus during the Vietnam War. We in the East arent so lucky -- we dont have Viet delis or bakeries here and as such, most of us dont even know banh mi sandwiches.
Whats so great abt Viet food is that it feels fresh & healthy & wonderfully aromatic. Lucky you!!
Cheers, Evonne |
