Vietnamese food is enjoyed the world over. Here's a question from an Italian visitor living in Rome.

Question:

Hi,

My name is Giorgio and I'm Italian. I lived for quite sometimes in the States and went mad in love for the Viet cuisine. There's a restaurant in Rome, wich is good enough but the american's restaurants are another thing. Anyway, i have a question. There's an herb, which i'm trying to figure out the name, that is an ingridient for the fresh spring roll and they used to serve me aside with the soup with the soya. It's not cilantro, the leafs look like basil. Do you know the name ? It has a very particular taste that we don't have here in Europe and i'm trying to buy the seeds...

Thanks for your prompt answer...

My answer:

Thank you for visiting this site. So there is a Vietnamese restaurant in Roma? That is wonderful! You are lucky. There are Vietnamese restaurants in France but those are too far for you to travel!

I believe that the herb you are asking about is called Thai basil. It is a Southeast Asian form of basilico.
From U.S. and Canadian vendors, you may order seeds from:

Giorgio's follow-up:
