If you live in the United States, here’s your chance to win a copy of Carolyn Jung’s new cookbook, San Francisco Chef’s Table. You got a taste of what’s inside via the ribs recipe from State Bird Provisions. What's inside the book?
You’ll find handsome chef portraits – lots of them. Among the Asian chefs featured, there are familiar chefs like Martin Yan and Hiro Sone and his wife Lissa Doumani of Michelin-star Ame. In the mix are young powerhouses like Belinda Leong of B Patisserie (I’ll be baking something from her this week) and Dennis Lee of Namu Gaji.
Each of the 55 chefs contributed recipes and they run the gamut. Leafing through, you'll see obvious Asian dishes like pan-fried noodles with XO sauce (MY China) and tandoori chicken (Amber India). But there are also nifty new twists, like recipes for an elaborate bowl of breakfast rice congee (Spice Kit) and gutsy Thai mango scone (Craftsman and Wolves).
San Francisco Chef’s Table offers a nice survey of the restaurants shaping the Bay Area’s food scene. No, you won’t find hole-in-the-wall spots but there’s plenty in the work for anyone to get a sense of what is available at Northern California eateries these days. With regard to the recipes, they’ve thankfully been scaled down for us mere mortal home cooks.
So, if you’re interested in getting a copy for free, here’s your chance!

I love B Star Bar: unfussy and inexpensive, yet fun, modern, and (importantly) delicious. As for dessert, b patisserie can't be be beat. Maybe I just love "b" restaurants..!

To find out our favorite restaurant, Uwe and me definitely need that book. And because we can't fly all the time to SF to check it out, we should try to copy the menus in Berlin! And of course Berlin needs more Californian spirit! So I see only two solutions: We get the book, or you have to come personally to Berlin! 😉
P.S. By the way, we have an American postal address.

Just sitting down to eat Mapo Tofu from Asian Tofu. I am addicted to that recipe.
Certainly not my favorite restaurant in SF, but in my old hood (the inner sunset) there's a vietnamese place called Perilla. They make one of the foods I miss most… the deboned, deep fried chicken leg. They call it their 5 spiced chicken. Get it with the soup and it comes on the side. or atop vermicelli, or next to garlic noodles if that's your thing.
